More first light Q's, Australian source of cermain resistors?

Hi all.
Well, I had another play with my coil last night. I made many adjustmenys,
[such as raising and lowering the primary] without much effect to the
result at all. I have come to the conclusion that there are 3 main factors;
I wonder I could get some comments? It is interesting to note, though, that
I could light a fluro from about 2-3 meteres away - suggesting an untuned
coil??
1] My spark-gap is only running at a third of its pipes, to stop the
flashover on the metal-encased resistors. Does anyone know where to get the
ceramic types in Australia? It took me a loong time to track down the metal
ones :) [and they cost au$17 each too]. Will fixing this make a significant
improvement?
2] The distance from the innermost turn of the primary to the secondary is
about 2-2 1/2 inches. Someone suggested that I made this gap smaller, down
to about 1-1 1/2 inches. What do you think?
3] I was using a 'quick' earth last night, eg about a foot of wire driven
into the ground. Is this ok?
Thanks again, and have a joyful and safe Christmas with your family and
friends.
