The best solution, of course, is to get UPS to spring for a new one.  But
if you have to get at the dents, I'd think that splitting the toroid
would not be a good idea; getting it back together again smoothly might
be a real problem.  Plus, it'd take a lot of heat to deteriorate the
epoxy, if that is indeed what they used to stick it together.

You should be able to make a few holes around the inner periphery,
against the web and appropriately located, with a hole-saw--perhaps 1"
dia.  Thru those, you might be able satisfactorily to ding out the dings.
 The interior holes should not affect the voltage-withstanding capability
of the toroid if they are well below the top.

Happily, my 6061 toroid came thru OK: both it & its box, in perfect
shape.
