I imagine the gas in this "tube" would ionize from the HVRF (high voltage 
radio frequency) fields. It would then become conductive, and "look" like a 
piece of metal to the coil. This would probably lower the inductance, and 
throw your system out of tune.

Won't help performance. It would probably do nothing but cause problems. 
However, a glowing gas ball in the middle of one's coil would have an 
interesting look I suppose...
