Where do you live?  Are you in North America?  I know what you mean about
acquiring neons.  For me it has been the most annoying thing about coiling.
 Have you considered giving up on neons and trying microwave oven
transformers (MOTs)?  They are a pain in the neck in some ways, but they
are cheap and available everywhere.  I improvised a 12kvdc, 4kVA power
supply based on two MOTs just so I would no longer be dependent on NSTs.
The MOT supply looks crude, and I suppose it is, but it sure coaxes some
nasty sparks from my 4" coil!  If you used all that time you're burning
chasing NSTs to build a MOT supply, you'd be sparking by now.
