You are pretty much correct about a capacitance bridge. It would make a very
long post to go into detail. A good electronics textbook (older ones are
generally better than more modern texts) should give a good description. The
circuit is driven with AC rather than the DC used for a classic Wheatstone
bridge, and you therefore need a method of detecting the null point (years
ago I had a bridge which would also measure inductance, that used headphones
as the detector). It would certainly be possible to build one, in fact it
would make a very useful project, I might well have a go myself.
