Garth,

Polyester is very lossy.  It will get hot and give poor performance.
In a test I did of polyester (Mylar) vs. Polyethylene, the polyester
cap required 15% more power for the same spark lengths, and the
sparks looked wimpy and deadish.

Other good dielectrics are high quality mica (a somewhat rare 
mineral now in the good quality types), and polystyrene plastic.
