Hi Matt,
a DC powered tesla coil generates high frequency current that is fed into
the base of a secondary coil. So instead of a primary coil you directly
feed the secondary with high frequency alternating current (usually a high
frequency pulse train passed through a capacitor). So in answer to your
question, the output from a DC TC is AC, if that makes any sense.
