Static Spark Gap

I'm new to the whole concept of coiling and I'm looking to make a relatively 
small coil while using a static spark gap.  I have little real life 
experience as how to make a spark gap (how hot they get, etc) so please be 
patient.  Does anyone know of a site that explains how to make static spark 
gaps?  I was hoping to set it up so that I didn't need an air blast so I'm 
probably looking at series of static ones, but I know little beyond that.
