I have a small 3.0" dia coil made from acrylic.  No preparation is necessary, 
just wind the wire.  Be careful of what you use to coat the finished windings 
with.  I used polyurethane.  The solvents in many types of coatings will 
attack the acrylic and cause thousands of small cracks throughout the form.  
You might test a piece first.  I just got lucky on mine, but have since found 
this problem with acrylics.
