Not necessary. The pinwheel works with any polarity, apparently
equally well (but it would be interesting to see experimental
evidence of some difference with different polarities, with DC,
or with AC). It works also if just put close to a high-voltage
source, without direct connection except by corona, or if sparks
are made to pass through its arms. In the last case, if observed
in the dark, in the light of the sparks, it appears immobile.
