Better then to "let Nature talk", making measurements of the actual
current waveforms passing through the resistors as the gap is gradually
opened.
My idea would really require assymmetrical gap characteristics for
the transient to repeat for several periods in succession.
A complete description of the setup would be needed for
further theoretical attempts to guess what is happening.
What could cause the NST to allow more current than in short-
circuit conditions?
Resonance with a capacitor, but there is no capacitor.
Transients causing DC in the circuit, but your test gives opposite
results to what I would expect (but I may be looking at the
wrong side of the problem).
Core saturation in the NST, but this would require the current
to increase first, just enhancing the effect.
An interaction between the positive output inductance of the NST
and a possible dynamic negative resistance of the gap?
