A relatively cheap way to test the absolute limits for a particular
type of commercial small cap might be to connect a single string in
parallel with a 'properly' rated TC cap on an existing coil - the
relatively small extra capacitance of a single string mean that the TC
could be retuned easily, and you could reduce the number of caps in
the string one by one until destruction point, which would only kill a
few caps, at relatively little cost.
