Would surge arrestors as those used in telephone circuits be useful
to make a sealed spark gap? I have many of them, rated at a few
hundreds of volts each. They look as a thick glass tubes with some
gas sealed inside, and sturdy metal electrodes. Many in series 
would break at a few thousands of volts.
