I was under the impression that ozone was odorless, though I could be wrong.
You should check to see whether there is any arcing under oil anywhere in the
components.  Corona in the capacitor, for example, probably generates a pretty
awful stench.  I'd say there are other factors at work besides normal ozone
production, but I don't know enough to say exactly what could be wrong.
