A used Nikon FM or FM2 would be great. I use it as a back up to my Nikon F5.
Even for everyday use you never know when the batteries might go.

Another alternative is to use an older camera like a twin lens reflex or a
4x5 view camera.  With the larger film you can get some great quality
pictures.

In general the pictures I see of Tesla Coils are greatly underexposed for
the coil itself.  This is obviously to get the most detail in the sparks, so
its not just one big white blotch.  The best technique is a double exposure.
Take a frame with a flash set correctly with the coil not running.  Then
take the next frame in total darkness with the coil running and the exposure
set for the best spark definition (this will require some test exposures,
just be sure to write it down.)
