New Cap
Hi all
Today I tested out our new cap.
It is a plate type which has been Vac`ed down and back filled with oil
and has a
value of 0.015uF.
With the old salt water caps our coil hit about 18" from a break out
point on
the toroid now with the new cap it was hitting multy 22" sparks.
I tested the cap all afternoon for the first 3 hours I limites the input
from the
veriac to only 70 volts AC and only used 5 gaps with my RQ static.
After that I up`d the input power to 100 volts and all went well.
At about 5pm I thought it was time to see what the cap could do so I
gave it full
output from the veriac (260 volts)and thats when the spark lenght hit
the 22" mark.
The saftey gap on the cap fired one time only and wow did it go with a
bang.
The coil now need a bigger top load, which I do have but did not take it
with me
for todays test.
Now for the BAD news (sorry Brian) the cap has a small oil leak around
the top
plate so more thought will be needed on sealing it up.
I must say that the difference between a poly cap and a S/W is stunning.
So to all those with S/W caps you really should think about building a
poly cap.
I took a few pictures so when they come out I`ll stick them on my web
site.
Cheers and thank for all the advice in the past Mike Tucknott
