You could also dig a trench around the rod and fill it with salt and let it 
dissolve into the soil to improve the conductivity.  I would not do this with 
sodium chloride around plants or lawn . Magnesium or potassium sulfates would 
be harmless to plants and  even good for them if the soil is deficient in 
either Mg or K.
