I did a quick test with my set up using static gaps.  I think I'm
seeing a pronounced firing delay at certain ballast settings, but
it's hard to tell, because the chaotic firing of the static gap upsets
the scope triggering.  Nevertheless, I am seeing a large voltage
build up on the caps, equal to that seen with the sync gap.  I
can't be sure I'm firing on every half cycle though because of the
terrible scope jittering.  But it certainly looks like it's firing every
half cycle...the voltage ramp up has the same appearance as
with the sync gap.  Maybe someone else will check this out
in their system before we get too (e)static though     :)
