Hi John, All,
What would happen if you set the gaps too wide to fire normally and
triggered them into conduction with an SCR fired ignition coil synched to
the AC line?

+AD4-A few folks had asked some time ago, if this coil could give the
+AD4-same performance using a good static gap system as with the
+AD4-sync-gap. I had done some tests in the past which gave less
+AD4-performance using the static gap, (I think the static gaps gave 31+ACI-
+AD4-or so in those tests?)
+AD4-Anyhow, I installed the new 24 gap static gap onto the coil,
+AD4-in place of the sync-rotary, and obtained 34+ACI- to 35+ACI- sparks max.,
+AD4-using 23 gaps, (sometimes the gaps fail to fire using 24 gaps, but
+AD4-when they do fire, the sparks are not noticeably longer).
+AD4-In a re-test of the sync gap set up, I easily obtained 40+ACI- sparks,
+AD4-I didn't bother peaking the performance to get 42+ACI- sparks, but I
+AD4-know from past tests that 42+ACI- sparks are possible.

+AD4- cap... .007uF polypropylene, Maxwell brand, polypropylene.
+AD4- sync-gap.... Gives 120 breaks per second.
+AD4- ---- or static gaps.... 1/2+ACI- by 2+ACI- copper pipes glued to a wooden
+AD4- board, spaced 8.5mils, 23 of 24 used.
+AD4- transformer....neon sign, 12kV, 30ma, Jefferson Magnetek brand
+AD4-Conclusion: This static gap does not seem to be able to equal the
+AD4-performance of the sync-gap in this NST powered TC. I think the
+AD4-static gap fires at too low a voltage to give optimal performance, but
+AD4-if the total gap is made wider, they fail to fire. However, 35+ACI- sparks
+AD4-from this NST with static gaps is still a good output.
