Not quite... adding an inductor WILL reduce the peak current - the
maximum current will scale as the square root of the ratio of tank
capacitance over inductance. Thus, quadrupling the inductance in the
protection loop will halve the peak current, but it's the resistance in
the loop (gap, inductor, and any added series resistance) that will
actually dissipate the tank cap's energy...
