Considering the technology of that time, the circuit is more
probably an induction coil charging a capacitor, followed by
a kind of Tesla coil. The capacitors for the second stage were
usually banks of Leyden jars, or big glass plate capacitors
insulated with paraffin or wax.
It is possible to design a multistage Tesla coil, but there
is no need of more than one gap, in the first stage. The "magnifier"
is the first step beyond the basic circuit, and it is possible
to add more stages. To my knowledge, however, this was never
done.
