Nothing, for smaller coils.

It might be apparent for a very large coil, which may need an extensive
grounding network installed right in the earth.

Generally, any coil will function better with a rotary gap. But bear in
mind that they are very stressful on neon sign transformers, and at that,
only AC sunchronous rotary gaps should be used with NSTs at all.
