Yes, this technique was used in the heyday of wireless.  It was used for
matching loads to antenna and between pri = sec of HV air core coils.   It
is technically called a variometer.   With good design (large dia) it is
very low inductance & high Q factor and a series variometer can be used to
adjust the inductance while the oscillator is operating (very carefully of
course).  N. Tesla used a variometer in several of his designs especially
Col. Springs.
