I have a giant 4-1000-A Tube, with 5 bottom pins and a nipple....

 Is it usefull for anything?
How do I apply power to it just to make it glow (for pretty, not for
 funtion)? >>

Chris,
The 4-1000A / 8166 is a real goodie.
It is a radial-beam tetrode good for a kilowatt output up to 110 mHz.
The thoriated tungsten filament needs a nominal 7.5 V -at- 20 A min to 22.7 A
max.
Meter the fil voltage right at the terminals. Tungsten becomes very brittle,
don't
shake the tube. Use a variac to heat the filament slowly. Thoriated tungsten
filaments
must be operated at rated values if you power-up the tube.

pins
1-5..................fil
2-4..................grid 2
3......................grid 1

uses Eimac HR-8 plate connector and SK-500 forced-air socket

typical operation for one tube up to 110 mHz:

plate V............................5000 V
screen V........................ 500 V
grid V.............................. -200 V
plate current.................. 700 mA
screen current.............. 147 ma
grid current.................... 45 ma
plate diss.......................1000 W
screen diss................... 73 W
grid diss......................... 7 W

A 1991 price from Richardson Electronics is $895.
I would hold it with both hands. :-))
