Re: Scroungein' (fwd)
Hi Chris,
how much cash do you have to spend on the caps? The sort of
size and voltage you need will cost $$$$$s commercially and as you have no
previous experience you won't want to make your own. Also your air spaced
idea would be good if you could provide enough airflow over it to stop the
ionized air building up and also not mind the fact that it will vibrate like
a kango hammer (rubber spacer blocks?) Also you may want to calculate just
how massive that will be (it will need 1600sqft. of plate spaced 0.6" apart
in air) or 17 layers of 10' by 10' steel sheet which would weigh (assuming
5mm thick sheet)
4176 kilos (as much as a truck) and cost more than the Maxwell pulse caps it
would replace.
Also don't you think that this is a bit big for a first coil. I presume that
someone is stumping up the $10k or so this thing will cost (including that
60' dia spun ally toroid, all the caps you will fry, the ballast for the pig,
the 10lbs of wire you will need, the specially heat treated wood for the coil
forms, the 40A servoed variacs, the prescision machined rotor assembly, the
tungsten electrodes, the 2" thick plexiglas case for the rsg and the 2hp
motor for the rsg, and those caps I discussed earlier) and therefore may
actually want some sparks for their cash (subtle implication - you will kill
yourself and many inoccent bystanders long before you get anything like a
reasonable spark output for the power level)
Also some advice on those hv gloves - ditch them. You don't want to put your
life in other people's hands more than you have to. Switch off and short any
equipment you are working with before you touch it.
