will allow higher currents (and faster recharging of the cap = higher
BPS than 2*Fmains) to be sucked from a shunted xformer."

        Exactly so, steady state.  When the gap is firing the capacitor is
periodically shorted to ground and transient conditions apply. 
Depending on the gap firing voltage you might get a steady spark at one
per half cycle, or almost anything else.
