Mike,

98 % of a coil's performance is determined by other things than the
type of primary.  So they'll all work about the same,
assuming equal coupling.  Tubing is fine, I wouldn't bother to change
the primary if I were you.  I doubt you'd gain even one more inch of
spark output, no matter how the primary is improved.  What type of
gap are you using?  Tight coupling is not always the answer either,
sometimes looser coupling is better depending on gap quenching,
toroid size, etc.
