Jon,

If you're using a resonant sized cap, try using a synchronous
rotary gap, and you should get even longer sparks.  Sometimes
the sparks will be a little longer if the coupling is a little looser
rather than too tight, but this has to do with how many simultaneous
streamers form also (which depends on toroid size).
