If you are going to space your secondary wire one thickness apart it will 
make no difference if you use bare or insulated wire since the polyurethane 
coating you will paint on the finished coil will be more than enough 
insulation. If you are going to wind the coil so the turns touch then it 
will have to be insulated wire. Unless you are building a gigantic coil I 
would suggest sticking with single conductor wire.

At the frequencies used in Tesla coils the skin effect prevents any current 
from entering the center of conductors so solid thick wire is a waste of 
material. I would suggest refrigeration tubing.
