>Hi all
>	Fired up the coil for the first time today. 12" sparks straight off from
the 8" toroid. We then spent some time playing with the tuning and the
coupling. With 6 turns tapped in we got sparks all over the toroid without
any breakout points. the bottom of the secondary was about level with the
3rd turn of the primary. We started with one gap on the spark gap but
quickly moved up to two as the safety gap was not firing and all seemed
well . This seemed to increase the power ie noise but not the spark length.
We then tried the 19" x 4" toroid after re tuning and got 12" sparks with
breakout points. we used 8 turns on the tap,and kept the coupling the same.
We then stopped to find some ear protection and to invite the neighbors to
a show at dusk. The neighbors were impressed or terrified but stayed for
awhile. After more tuning and opening up the gap to 0.125" we managed 24"
to a grounded wire. At that point we stopped as it was 11.30 in the
evening. The coil is hooked up with 18 awg stranded antenna wire. we are
also using this to the ground. 2 5 foot 3/4" copper pipes 2 foot apart. I
feel this might be a weak point. would 1/4" copper tube be better as the
ground connection? I am still not sure about the coupling. with the small
toriod we can see corona around the top of the seconary but it dissapears
with the larger toroid. should we fine tune with the tap and then try
changing the coupling?. Thanks to Mike Hammer, Bert Hickman, Hollmike and
everybody else for all their help.
