Death Ray - a serious proposal ;)

One experiment I tried was to stand a portable soldering iron with a
'pencil flame' on top of the Toroid of my tesla coil.

It's really strange to see the Tesla Coil produce perfectly straight arcs
through the flame!

I would presume that the ionisation in the flame is responsible, and maybe
the steam that is produced as a consequence of the combustion of butane.

I'm sure a candle would work quite well too.

Just remember to keep that fire extinguisher handy (like we don't already
have enough sources of ignition about!)
