Subject: COIL TEST!

I tested my new 6 1/4" coil tonight and was kind of amazed at what I got
out of it. I tried a different setup to test this coil. First of all
I only used a 7kv-at-60ma neon to test it with. O.K. this is what I did,
I am sure someone has tried this before, I set my coil up in kind of
like a magnifyer setup. I took the normal ground wire from the secondary
and instead of hooking it up to ground, I hooked it up to one of my 4"
secondaries and place it about 12" from my coil. When I fired it up
I only used one gap set at .030" to adjust coupling and toroid height.
It started out at first just as a spec of purple on the end of the extra
secondary's top wire (I did not use a toroid on the extra secondary just
the bare wire). Once I had the secondary height adjusted the spec grew
to a little bit more purple and more corona. Then I adjusted the toroid
height to get the best output, by this time I was getting 1"-2" sparks
off of the extra secondary and a little bit of corona off of my coils
toroid. I then stepped the gap up to 2 series gaps, I then got 1"-2"
sparks off of the toroid and about 3" sparks off of the extra coil.
Then I made a jump from 2 gaps to 6 gaps which was a little to much for
the small neon, it started cutting out. So I then cut the gap back to 5
series gaps and I was getting a solid 10" arc from the toroid to the
extra coil. I was surprised at this output because I was running such a
small neon. Also I might add that the coil wasn't at full potential.
I was using salt water/aluminum tape caps. But that isn't the half of
it, I am only running 5% of the capacitance the neon can handle.
The measured value of the caps I was using was .001uf the neon can
handle about .02uf. I am hoping that with a poly cap at .02uf I can
'blast' my other coil out of the water. My old coil used a 15kv-at-30ma
and I obtained a max of 19" of spark. What does everyone think?
You think I can get at least 2' off of this coil.

I originally didn't make this coil for a 7kv neon, I made it for my
modified 12kv neon running about 80ma using a .016 poly cap.
