i got a chance to see one of these up close in a spencers once. it
appears to be a flyback type device like the kiind used in plasma
globes. an anode is stuck throug a glass disc
then a  glass ring with an o.d. the same as the disk and an i.d. of
about 1 inch less is put on top. then (this is the secret) a bunch of
neon\argon whatever impregnated glass beads are put inside the ring. top
it off with another disc and seal it up. this is as much as i gathered
from string at one from 5 inches. ill bet spencers got the idea for
these things form the borg on star trek. the cells where the borg
recharge have these things in green near their heads. im sure im not the
only one whos seen this :)
