If you are going to run a 12 kV 30 ma xmfr your present tank cap value of
.005 MFD will be a good match. Be sure to put the spark gap across the
xmfr and run the cap in series with the primary tap. Do NOT put the cap
directly across the xmfr and then run your spark gap in series with the
primary tap -- this is a great way to damage an NST (neon sign
transformer). There is a math section in the Tesla group -- perhaps Chip
could elaborate on its address. You will have to set up a temporary
primary coil using some scrap 12 AWG house wiring -- try around 20 turns
for starters and then scrap off a bare section on each turn so you can tap
down to find the best resonant value. Be sure to stagger the bare taps
around the primary so they don't flash over (the might if aligned). Be
sure to UNPLUG the unit before moving the primary tap each time you try a
different tuning point -- it takes more time but is a lot safer.
