Do you mean you "loosened" the upper/outer turns, increasing their diameter
and thus reduced the number of turns?

I haven't seen corona on the primary, but so far I haven't excited the coil
with that much energy, I guess. Or maybe flat spiral primaries are more
prone to corona?
