Thanks to Richard, John, Bert and others for the thoughts on this. I 
am planning a much more rigorous and thorough investigation for this 
weekend (no lawns to mow) which will include measurement of air 
streamers and some photos off the scope to study in detail. Perhaps I 
might look at an total number of shots over several two minute periods 
to get the best statistical results.
    The plan of attack will be to run close to breakout so only 
single streamer roots occur. The real problem with air streamers is 
in defining just where they end. If one looks in dark enough 
conditions one sees brushes extending well beyond the brightest areas.
