Jim,
Are you using a step up type input variac? 0 to 140 volts output
from a 120 volt main. Did I mention I use this? What kind of spark
gap and toroid are you using? I obtained about 46" to 49" using
a static gap, but the operation was erratic and the NST became
carbon tracked, but I wasn't using any NST safety devices at the
time. Now I use safety gaps with my sync gap systems, and
haven't had any more problems.
