Tonight I set up my coil and tried a couple of things. I connected the RG213
cables from the coil to the H.V. filter board and left the RG213 shields
unconnected. I also took the toroids out of the H.V. feed system. They were
only about 20 turns of #14 wire on large donut ferrites. Low inductance but
I don't have my notes here to tell you how much. I also moved the resistor
bank to be in series with instead of in parallel with the welder. This is
3.3 ohms.
Same exact performance as before. At about 12 amps of primary current, I
can't turn the variac up past about 50% before the safety gap across the
capacitor starts firing. The gap is set to 5/8" again. I let it run for a
while at about 40% variac setting and nothing seemed to get hot. I was
getting about 26" discharges to a ground rod at this point.
The secondary did not even get warm. How do I figure out if the inside of
the secondary is charcoal - as Dan suggested might be the case? I am
thinking about drilling a 1/2" hole in the bottom disc and checking the
inside with a flashlight.
