Firstly, I presume you're aware of the articles in Aug '97 Scientific
American ?
I did a search on one of the names (Xin Miao Zhao) on Alta Vista, &
turned up some references that may be of use to you.  At this URL
http:galaxy.cau.edu/tsmith/LLtng.html
is a reference to New Scientist mag of 7 Oct '95, & the following two
names :
Zen-Ichiro Kawasaki, University of Osaka, & Takatoshi Shindo, from
Central Research Institute of the Electric Power Industry, Tokyo.
These people are working with Jean-Claude Diels & Xin Miao Zhao, from
the Scientific American article.
Suggest you check the page out &/or do the same search.  Hope this
