Subject: Definition of Tesla Coil ??
Dear Learned friends,
There's been a lot of discussion, recently, about whether or not TV
flybacks, etc qualify as Tesla coils.
I've often wondered, & don't recall ever having seen a useful
definition. Is it asking too much to define the term 'Tesla Coil' ? I
bet Nikola never called his that - I presume it's a term that evolved
much later to cover a whole range of HV transformer devices.
I once had a very old Cossor CRO (with a 5BP1 tube) which had a 'Tesla
Coil' EHT supply for the 2 kv or so required by the tube. It's a vague
memory, & I was young, but it was just an air-cored RF transformer on
that brown paper-phenolic stuff, & didn't look a whole lot different
from the IF transformers of the day - size & shape-wise.
So, I'm sure some of you would like to offer me your _definition_ of a
TC. What, exactly, characterises one, & on what basis can you assert
that item A is a TC & item B is not ?...........
