Gary,
I am a electronics tech by trade but I have rebuilt several generators for
Tesla coil and general use. Before you get to excited, some of the first things
you must check are, does the engine turn over or is it sized, or does it turn
over too easy. If so, pull the plugs and turn the engine over and see if the
pistons go up and down. If not, you have a blown rod ( the most common reason
that company's get rid of them ) usually not worth repairing unless you need it
really bad it takes special tools to separate the engine from the generator I
have done it before by chaining the engine to a telephone pole and chaining
the other to a cat let's just say the pole was a little lose after wards (I
wont be doing that again).

hope the above info helps.

P.S. most company's steam clean or presurewash their equipment monthly. That's
why there is no dirt and that is also were the rust probably came from.
