Sure, you could move to solid state. Some have built what are essentially
power oscillators at 100 kHz or so. However, the efficiency is generally
lower, in terms of wall plug power in to RF power out. And, if you want to
work at reasonably high voltages so the resistance of the primary doesn't
suck up all your power from I^2R losses, solid state devices have a bit of
a problem. Not that it can't be done, though. 

In the power industry, they have very high power inverters that convert 1MV
DC (from an intertie, for instance) to fairly high voltage AC for
distribution (not sure what, but probably at least 235kV). They do it with
a whole stack of SCR's.  Now, you aren't going to be switching SCR's at 100
kHz, but, perhaps with a whole stack of IGBT's and a lot of support
circuitry for driving and equalizing voltages...
