The "Handbook of Chemistry & Physics" (Chemical Publishing Co.)
has a table of spark-gap distances in air at STP for needle
point gaps, and gaps using spherical electrodes of various
diameters. At least the older editions do -- not sure about
the more recent ones. Note that the relationship of voltage
vs. distance is non-linear with voltage.
This standard reference work is certain to be found in any
technical library and in a great many public libraries.
Spark gaps/knowlege gaps - neither
should be too great,
