rule of thumb for distance between spark gaps
for applied voltage. Can someone give me the rule

If there are any "rules of thumb" they are probably
inaccurate. Look at table of spark gap voltages for needle
and sphere gaps of differing radii in the Handbook of Chemistry
and Physics. (Chemical Rubber Company)
