John,

Yes, I have.  With just the spark gap or just the spark gap and 
primary, there may be either a very small positive or negative 
deflection or none at all.  There is no consistancy either way.  If a 
small deflection occurs it's probably 1/10 the magnitude of that from 
the secondary.

RH has gotten ES signals from his magnifier also, but none from his 
tube coil.

Would you be interested in testing your DC tube coils, particurally the 
stacatto version?
