In April there was a thread about how to properly anneal copper. I
was digging through soe of my old books and found one of the books I
have on metal spinning and in a chapter devoted to materials there is
a good table on annealing etals including copper. The book is
entitled; "Metal Spinning for Craftsmen, Instructors, and Students"
by James E. Reagan and Earl E. Smith, 1936 Bruce Publishing, New
York, The Annealing table appears in Chapter VI on page 39. This book
has been reprinted by Lindsays Publications and should be available
if anyone wants to learn how to spin their own Top terminals. It does
not show how to spin torids but it does give instructions on large
spheres and if you go through the entire book the method of spinning
torids should be self evident.
ANNEALING TABLE
Degrees
Fahrenheit Color, ect.
Monel Metal......... 1700 Bright yellow
Steel (C.R.S.)...... 1200 Bright cherry red
Aluminum............ 650 Will just char white-pine sawdust
Copper.............. 1000 Very dull red, iridescent
Brass............... 1000 Very dull red when auto oil burns off
Zinc................ 212-375 Boiling water, spin hot
Pewter.............. 0 No annealing required
Lead................ 0 No annealing required
Monel metal, copper, and brass should be plunged in cold water
imediately after the annealing temperature has been attained. Steel
should be permitted to cool slowly. On page 37 it suggests that if
the copper should oxidize during the annealing process, a dipping
soloution of 5 percent sulphuric acid will restore it to a fine dull
pink.
