I suppose I'd answer - "for the same reason you buy a stereo or a video
game -
because it's fun". If the person has a fancy car, use the car instead.
For a
teacher, you can also allude to an interest in design and enginnering,
as in
"I like to build things".

When someone approaches you with these question:
"Why? Why would you build such a crazy device?". or
"What purpose could this device possibly have for you?".
(I'm sure you have heard a thousand other variations)
