It should work, you'll just have to find the right voltage to be able 
to saturate the core thus stopping all A.C then throw a potentiometer 
across it as a voltage divider and you'll be all set. BTW a couple of 
days ago I visited a local Neon sign establishment and they had two 
bombarder transformers on their work bench. One was about 20 years 
old and to control the current it used a large choke (about 15 inches 
long X 4 inches in diameter) and to vary the current you pull the 
core gradualy out of the windings. The other bombarder was brand 
spanking new and guess what, it uses a D.C. controlled saturable 
reactor to control the current!
