Variac is a short abbreviation for "variable autotransformer". A variac
is
a transformer wound on a circular core and features an adjustable wiper
arm
with a carbon brush. It allows you to continually vary the output
potential. Most common variacs feature a hand wheel to adjust the
output,
but the more advanced units are stacked in multiples to control large
amounts of AC power and feature a small drive motor to slowly turn the
wiper arm. This allows slow and smooth adjustment of the output
potential.
