Sort of on the subject of "smoked" capacitors. Don't remember
if anyone has pointed out that one of the causes of failure when
air bubbles have not been eliminated is corona within the bubble,
which can oxidize the oil and/or the dielectric and lead to rapid
failure. Guys at Hughes Aircraft used to run a corona test on
high-voltage pulse capacitors for radar modulators in which they
applied high-voltage 60 cycles and listened for the electrical
noise generated by the corona. If it was present the capacitor
(usually vacuum impregnated with some form of solid insulating
compound) was rejected as a potential early failure.
